Inside the Workshop: How a Brass Bathtub Comes to Life

Brass bathtubs are bold, timeless, and far from ordinary. Unlike mass-produced acrylic tubs, these are built by hand, one step at a time. Each tub carries the marks of the maker—from the curve of the rim to the depth of the shine. Here’s how the process unfolds, start to finish.

Step 1: Raw Brass, Real Work

Everything begins with raw brass sheets—an alloy of copper and zinc. The exact ratio depends on the desired tone and durability, but quality always comes first. These sheets are thick, heavy, and unyielding—until a skilled hand steps in.

Step 2: Heat and Hammer

Shaping the tub is the most physical part of the process. Large brass panels are heated to make them more malleable. Then they’re bent, spun, or hammered into the basic shape. Whether it's a slipper tub or a double-ended design, the form has to be flawless. Every curve matters.

Step 3: Assembly by Hand

If the tub design includes multiple sections—like a separate base or decorative rim—they’re joined next. Welders carefully fuse the pieces, avoiding excess heat that can tarnish or warp the metal. Afterward, all seams are ground and blended into the surface. A well-made brass tub looks like one continuous piece.

Step 4: Surface Refinement

Once the structure is solid, the finishing begins. Makers polish the surface with increasingly fine abrasives to remove scratches and bring out the natural luster of the brass. Some clients want a mirror shine. Others prefer a brushed or antiqued finish. Either way, it takes hours of handwork.

Step 5: The Inside Story

While the outside shines, the interior may vary. Some tubs are left as raw brass inside. Others are lined with enamel or a high-performance coating for comfort and insulation. This step depends on the style and how the tub will be used.

Step 6: Final Details

Feet, drains, and overflow fittings are added last. These are often custom-cast in matching brass or complementary metals. Each connection is checked for fit and watertight seal. Then the tub is cleaned, inspected, and ready for installation.

Why It Matters

A brass bathtub isn’t just a bathroom fixture. It’s built to be seen, touched, and admired. Behind its shine is a team of artisans who shape metal the old-fashioned way—no shortcuts, no automation. That’s what makes each one unique.
